Trek on Mt. Olympus, the Mythical Mountain of Greek Gods
With 2917m high, Mountain Olympus is not just the highest mountain in Greece, but also the legendary home of the ancient Greek gods.
This ancient image of the holy mountain and its uncounted natural treasures are today protected by the Mt. Olympus National Park (since 1938) and the flanks of the mountain known as Kato Olympus or Lower Olympus has been declared a biosphere reserve.
Trekking the mountains, experiencing the spectacular peaks and ancient civilizations on the high mountain plateaus, spending time to sense their power and beauty is a journey through time and natural wonders.
Overnight we'll stay en route in comfortable guesthouses in small mountain villages and in well-organized mountain lodges (refuges).
Mt Olympus 8-day hiking tour - Itinerary
DAY 1: Arrival at Thessaloniki - Transfer to Litochoro
Upon arrival at Thessaloniki airport you will drive to Litochoro, a picturesque village at the foot of Mt. Olympus and the starting point of the trekking tour. There you’ll check-in at the guesthouse and have some time to relax and take a stroll around the village. (Overnight in Litochoro)
DAY 2 (4-5hrs walk): Litochoro - Mount Golna - Litochoro
The peak of Golna is just before the impressive main peaks of Mount Olympus. You’ll start your walk at the market square of Litochoro, the starting point of most Olympus treks. You’ll go through the quaint village roads to a path which leads directly to the Peak of Golna. Reaching the peak you’ll enjoy the beautiful view into the famous Vithos Gorge, overlooking the Aegean Sea. This hike is unique for its combination of the high mountain range with spectacular sea views. Your way back to Litochoro takes you through shady forests. (Overnight in Litochoro)
DAY 3 (6hrs walk): The Enipeas Gorge
The drive towards the old monastery Agios Dionysios offers commanding views of the highest peaks. Starting at the monastery, which is definitely worth visiting, you’ll take a remarkable hike through the gorge towards Litochoro. Just after a short time you’ll pass the Agio Spileo (the Holy Cave) where Agios Dionysios lived. The trail is well preserved and has many ups and downs along the gorge. You’ll cross the Enipeas River several times over small wooden bridges and rest at vista points overlooking the Aegean Sea. You’ll also pass picturesque waterfalls with cold, crystal-clear pools. (Overnight in Litochoro)
DAY 4 (4hrs walk): Litochoro - Agios Dionysios - Prionia - Refuge A
Today you’ll leave Litochoro for the next two days and be transferred again to Agios Dionysios. Your hike on the famous path E4 begins at the old mountain monastery, this time towards the highest peaks of Mount Olympus. After a short walk, you’ll reach the impressive Enipeas Waterfalls. At Prionia (1.100 m), where you’ll see also the springs of Enipeas River, you can have a short rest before continuing towards the refuge. The path leads mostly through a dense pine and beech tree forest. You’ll stay overnight at the Mountain Refuge A, which was built on a natural balcony with a unique view until the sea. (Overnight in Refuge A)
DAY 5 (5-6hrs walk): Refuge A - Olympus Peaks (Skala, Skolio, Ag. Antonios) - Refuge A
As a reward for yesterday’s hard ascent to the ‘seat of the gods’, you can enjoy the beautiful mountain sunrise above the Aegean Sea and spend the day trekking the peaks of Olympus. After breakfast at the refuge, you’ll hike up to the peak of Skala (2.866 m), where you can rest, eat your picnic lunch and take in the breathtaking views. You continue to the peak of Skolio (2.911 m) where you have an impressive view of Mytikas (2.917 m), the highest peak of the Olympus range. Then your hike goes on to the peak of Agios Antonios (2.815 m), overlooking the western slopes of Mount Olympus with the flatlands of Thessaly in front. You’ll return again to the Mountain Refuge A for overnight. (Overnight in Refuge A)
DAY 6 (7hrs walk): Refuge A – Kofto – Muses Plateau - Profitis Ilias - Gortsia
This day at Kato Olympus is an easy day of hiking, giving us the chance to rest in the afternoon from the efforts of the previous days. We'll leave Karya and our guesthouse in the morning and cross the valley following a footpath to the foot of Mt. Analipsi and the springs of Agia Paraskevi. The path leads over the mountain ridge into the beautiful plateau of Kallipefki where we have a short hike on an asphalt street leading into the traditional mountain village and our comfortable guesthouse.
