Today we shall visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, where we experience the cultural birth of Europe in the exhibition of artifacts of the Minoan period. Take in the impressions of the gracious charm and elegance of the finds from the palaces of Knossos, Malia, Phaestos and Kato Zakros. From the museum we shall go to the outskirts of Heraklion for a private tour of the famous, and somewhat controversial, Knossos Palace. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete. It is considered to have been the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization and culture. The site has been extensively “restored”, making it perhaps more understandable to visitors, though the restoration itself is very controversial. It was allegedly also the home of the legendary King Minos. The Palace is also associated with the myth of the Labyrinth with the Minotaur.
Please bear in mind that the itinerary can be altered for numerous reasons beyond our control (e.g., harsh weather, road conditions) to ensure the safety and the well being of the group. The final touring selection is left up to the trip leader.
